Sunway Open Resort to Public During Storm

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

The local resort opens its doors to the public as an evacuation spot for the upcoming storm. Council members Aniu and Ankhe Thorne who also owns and runs the Sunway resort stated in an interview with the Journal, they express their plans to help shelter the Isle's residents.

Mr. Thorne comments: "I wanted people informed that Sunway Resort as of today, November 1st entered a Silent state of Emergency, we put in motion awareness preparation to ensure the safety of our guests and Resort staff. Each of our staff has been handed an Emergency protocol manual that follows a step-by-step guide to ensure all our personnel, guests, tourists, and other people who will remain here during the storm to be safe and risk put to a minimum. We have appointed EC committee among our staff to enforce the protocol and ensure maximum safety of the clients within Resort, also, we will apply at the Council that Resort is listed as a shelter and accepted to offer bedding and food for the needed. for that reason, both of us put on hold any new reservations and asked those currently residing to leave the island while tis possible, allowing fewer people for Public service to worry about."

He also states while he is unsure of any plans put in place by the emergency services across the island, Sunway would try their best to work with them in any capacity.

Miss Thorne added that she was working with local services to help ensure that tourists on the island leave before the worst part of the storm hits. Stating, "In the meantime, I'm working on making sure the tourist are informed and sent home. Hopefully, this will pass out quickly with minimal damage without any losses "

Both strongly recommend that any residents interested in safeguarding their homes, or seeking shelter, attend the public meeting on Wednesday, November 4th. Addressing those who might be worried about the storm, Mr. Thorne comments: "I believe safety is everything. If they are staying on the island, WE suggest first thing is to come to the meeting and take all info the council will provide the community, we will issue a list of items that they can get at specially designed places for distribution of food, water, supplies and the manuals on how to ensure their homes suffer as minimal damage as possible. This is why we are holding this meeting, for those staying here. I do hope people take the time and come to the meeting, ask things they are unclear about, get advice from council members as well as public service officers, this will be no time to play the hero."
